A Picture Perfect Ending – PROM

It was finally the day that every Junior had been waiting for ever since the start of the school year, the most anticipated event and highlight of Junior Year,  Prom. Everything happened so fast that it seemed as if Junior Year just started, and yet, just like that, it’s already all over.

For most if not all Juniors, March 9, 2013 will always be a special day that truly symbolized a passing of rites to adulthood, a transcending moment, a strengthening of bonds and definitely both the end of a roller coaster ride of a year, and the beginning of greater things to come.

For me, it was definitely the most appropriate and picture perfect ending to such a surreal and phantasmagorical Junior Year, which was definitely, the best year of my stay in Xavier School. There were so many different firsts, experiences and memories that were made during Junior Year. Almost everyday was a meaningful and adventure filled day and no doubt, there was no better culminating event to sum up everything that just occured than PROM.

Looking back, it’s amazing how much time I spent and how much preparation I went through just for that one day to make sure that I made the night of the one person who was arguably the main reason for such an awe-inspring year, a special and memorable one. I really just wanted to show my appreciation and thanks for she was truly the catalyst of such a surreal year. To say the least, the year just wouldn’t be the same if I had not met her.

Whenever I look back and think about everything I had to go through during my Junior Year, I can’t help but feel sentimental that it’s all over. Even with all the tough times, turbulences, challenges and problems I faced during my Junior Year, I honestly wouldn’t have had it any other way. I am truly thankful to the Lord for all the blessings he has given me throughout the past school year.

Before Junior Year started, I kept asking myself, why do I even bother to go to school when every single day seemed so mundane and lackluster, and I’ll eventually forget everything I’ll learn anyway? Now that Junior Year has ended, I’ve finally found the answer, “I go to school because of the people (my friends, teachers, teammates, classmates, etc) who make each and everyday special, and because of magical experiences just like PROM.”

When the year began, I was lost, trying to search for my identity but I’m glad to say, I’ve found the light. In so many different ways, it truly has been a life changing year. To be frank, even a million words wouldn’t be enough to describe and capture the essence of what a Junior Year it has been.

The closest quote that can sum up what a year it has been is a quote from the Disney Movie Prom,

“Prom…a night when nice guys might not finish last. When friends might completely surprise you. When the person you where at in high school, could change in an instant. Maybe you find what you’re lookin’ for. Or maybe you just find, yourself. It’s true one night can bring us all together but it’s more than that. ‘Cause when it ends, it’s really just the beginning.” – Nova from Disney’s Prom

From the first day to the last day, it had definitely been a year like no other, but it truly is just the BEGINNING!

My Filipino Movie Making Experience – Something I’d Like To Call FUN!

My Filipino Movie Making Experience and The Many Things I Learned From This

As we reach the midway point of this week, it is very satisfying to be finished with all the assessments and only have the Quarterly Tests to worry about. It was especially fulfilling to close the book to two of the more memorable assessments that I had in this year, my English Research Paper and our Filipino Movie.

Although Filipino isn’t considered part of the Big 3 Subjects (English, Math and Science), it has always been one of my favorite subjects and my forte ever since high school started. This year was no different and my Filipino Class experience this year was the most memorable one so far. From the start of the year when we tackled Noli Me Tangere, a must read classical, to the very last assessment, our Filipino Movie.

Poster of our movie, "Anong Gagawin Mo"

Poster of our movie, “Anong Gagawin Mo”

Making this Filipino Movie was such a surreal experience and was truly one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in Junior Year. In the process of creating this movie, I learned so many different things and at the same time, I also got to know some of my classmates better. I am really thankful that the Filipino Department decided to give this project to us instead of having the mundane and routinely Quarterly Test that happens every year. They probably understood the fact that making a Filipino Movie would teach us so much more and would be a whole different learning experience compared to a test where we sit down for one hour and answer lackluster questions. If we had our Quarterly Tests, we would have probably taken the test then forget about everything we reviewed and what we just took, but with this Filipino Movie, we will most probably forever remember the experience of making this movie and everything we learned from it.

When I first heard about this project of ours from our Filipino Teacher, I was really excited and filled with exuberance especially since just recently I’ve become an avid fan of movies, and at the same time, I’ve always loved projects, especially major projects, where we need to apply several different skills and really put time and effort into it.

In creating a movie, one must first start with the formulation of a story and the writing of the script and sequence treatment. To be honest with you, this seems like an easy task, but it was actually very difficult and challenging to write an original story that would also fit all the guidelines that were given to us for this project. At the start, I really had no idea what my story was going to be, but as I dug deeper and looked around me, I came up with the basis of my story. I chose to base my story on a recent and unconventional experience of my friend.

Once I had the basis of my story, I had to add something that would make the story deeper and even more unique. As the days passed, different twists and ideas quickly came pouring into my head that I was able to put together my story and script. Looking back though, I think that I overdid it and my story turned out to be too complicated for a short film which ended up biting us in the back later on not only in creating the movie but also in the Film Festival, where we weren’t able to achieve our goal of first place, but then again, nobody’s perfect and life is about making mistakes and learning from them

The creation and filming of the movie was a whole different experience, where I was truly able to bond with classmates who I never really talked to throughout the school year. This is what I love about group works, where the you chose your group mates randomly. You’re forced to work with them and most of the time, you end up with at least one group mate who you never really talked to, but since you’re group mates, you are able to get to know each other better.

I’ll be frank with you, filming the movie was no cakewalk. We literally had to pour our blood, sweat, and tears during the four or five days we filmed. We offered two of our saturdays, one of our school holidays and several other breaks and hours in filming and editing this movie and trying to make it the best possible movie not for the grade but for what a Junior Year it has been and how we want to end the year with a bang. Because of this, we were sort of perfectionists and had to re-take different scenes several times, but seeing what we were able to accomplish in such a short period of time was truly awe-inspiring.

The only dismal and melancholic part was that we actually had to cut our film short because it was way above the time limit and our teacher told us that we would be disqualified if we didn’t. This was really painful because of the fact that we really worked hard in filming the parts and I really place a lot of thought in writing the story and making the script. To add insult to injury, during awarding ceremonies we didn’t place in the best movie category probably because the flow of our movie was not so smooth because first of all, we had to shorten it and cut some parts, and second, because of the already rigid time limit, we had no choice but make our ending an open ended one. Nonetheless, I’ve come to realize that it doesn’t matter if the judges didn’t choose our work, because deep down, I honestly know that if we were given a chance to show our full movie, it would have been the best, hands down.

Best Actor Award - I didn't win it, my GROUP did!

Best Actor Award – I didn’t win it, my GROUP did!

As a consolation, I was awarded best actor but it didn’t really feel so fulfilling, I actually felt quite dejected and apathetic especially after I found out our movie didn’t place in the top 3. I would have honestly preferred that our movie placed than me receiving an individual award. Nonetheless, I’m still grateful for this award and I’d really like to offer my award to all my group mates who made this Filipino Project a crazy, fun-filled, surreal and memorable experience like no other.

Group picture during one of many tiring but at the same time fun-filled filming days.

Group picture during one of many tiring but at the same time fun-filled filming days.

No matter what the results were, this movie making project will always be part of my favorite memories in my stay in Xavier. It ranks right up there with all the other memorable projects and experiences I’ve had. All the saturdays spent filming, all the sabaw moments, all the laugh trips in filming, all the lunches together with my group mates, all the retakes and bloopers, all the days staying after dismissal to work on this movie made this project something more than the grade, something bigger than school, something I’d like to call FUN!

To sum up everything I’ve learned from this experience and to sort of sum up this last academic week of Junior year, I’d like to quote a statement that I said during my English Oral Defense speech, “School is not just about the grades and the numbers; it’s a whole lot more than that! School is about learning. Learning not just facts, terms, names, equations, formulas, but learning VALUES and SKILLS that you can use in the future.” Projects like these really do give us students a chance to bring out our creativity and talents in ways that we could never fulfill inside a classroom.

To add to that statement, school is most importantly about the people we are able to meet and the FRIENDS we are able to make. This is something that I truly realized in making this project, the importance of working with others, getting to know people and building FRIENDSHIPS that lasts forever. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better way (assessment) to end my Filipino Junior Year experience.

PS. In writing this post, I’ve pondered upon what I would answer to our movie teaser, “Kapag lahat na lang ay nawawala sa iyo…..Anong Gagawin Mo?” or in English, “When you’re losing everything already……what will you do?” As I end this blog post, I think I’ve finally found the answer to that question, but then again, maybe I haven’t, but that’s why I live LIFE…….the DOitChoco way! 🙂

Highlights of the Week – Things to Be Thankful For…..

thankful2

There are so many different things that go on in our lives that we aren’t able to fully grasp and appreciate everything that happens to us. Most of us are very busy and pre-occupied with either our school work, extra-curricular activities, work and other obligations that we tend to disregard all these little things in life.

When I started this blog, I mentioned how I want to turn all those ephemeral and fleeting moments into lasting memories by writing about each and everyone of them but I’ve come to realize that it is very hard to detail and talk about each and every moment that flies by during each and everyday. This is because of all the other commitments and activities I have added to my everyday school work. This really got me thinking as to how I can still crystalize all the awe-inspiring moments that happen each and everyday despite those busy days where I just don’t have time to write a blogpost.

Just this week, my older sister mentioned this very innovative organization in her school, HKUST that delivers something called, the One Minute News, every week. This One Minute News segment caters to the very busy and occupied students of HKUST who don’t have time to catch up with recent happenings and news headlines. This One Minute News summarizes and highlights all the important headlines and happenings that the very busy students may have missed all in one minute.

This idea led me to start this segment of mine called, Highlights of the Week – Little Things to be Thankful for to help me recall and remember all the highlights both big and small that I may have forgotten and under appreciated because of the nature of life and how fast everything occurs. In my journey to becoming a happier person and living life to the fullest, I find looking back and being thankful for everything that happens to you, may it be something life changing or even heart wrenching or just an ordinary incident, very essential in growing as a person and keeping a positive outlook in life for like they say, YOLO, you only live once!

So during this past week, Feb 18 – Feb 23, these are the memorable moments that I am thankful for

1. Finalization and Submission of our Filipino Short Movie titled, “Anong Gagawin Mo?” (or in english, “What Would You Do?”) – This is one of the projects that I really poured a lot of effort into and it feels really fulfilling and gratifying to see the finish product. Hard work never gets old, especially when it pays off in the end. I am really happy that our movie was chosen by our Filipino teacher to be the one to represent our class in our film festival especially after all the saturdays and holidays me and my group mates spent preparing, creating and filming this production. Working on this project is definitely one of the more memorable moments of my Junior Year!

2. Accidentally dropping my phone to the ground (which led to the screen getting shattered) – Thankfully though, I was able to get it repaired, and it looks good as new. The feeling of anxiety that I got when I saw what happened to my phone which is one of my more valuable possessions and is something I use each and every day, was really nerve racking. I truly learned my lesson and this time, I’m gonna make sure that my phone is protected and ready just in case another accident, where I end up dropping my phone occurs (off to buy my otter box!).

3. Farewell speech of Father Go – Our School Director, Father Johnny Go’s Farewell Speech during our last general assembly for the year was one of the most heart warming and inspirational speeches I’ve ever heard from Father. Father Go never fails to move people whenever he speaks, his homilies, speeches and talks will be missed! I was truly fortunate that I was awarded a Chinese Writing Award during this last general assembly for I was able to shake Father Go’s hand one last time.

4. Last Mentoring Period for my Junior Year – How time flies by; it seemed just like yesterday when Junior Year just started and I was joining a whole new class with a completely different set of classmates in 3A. Looking back, despite all of the challenges, quandaries, setbacks and all, it was one no doubt one helluva of a crazy year indeed and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

5. Fountain International School Science Fair – Attending this science fair was one crazy experience. Witnessing innovative and creative minds of talented individuals ranging from all ages was a truly breathtaking experience. Add to the fact that I was able to meet new people and gain new friends was the icing on the cake. To top it all off, I also got to meet my “former” and “favorite” turkish math teacher.

Looking back at these highlights, I can say that I am truly blessed to be living such a fortunate life filled with so many awe-inspiring moments and adventures. I am truly thankful for everything that happened to me during the past week and hopefully, the coming weeks will be just as awesome or even better.

count-your-blessings1

PS. I will try my best to make separate blog posts and expound on some if not all of these highlights for there were a thousand different things I learned from every second of these moments.

Phantasmagorical Moments that Make Life Worth Living – Feb 12, 2013

*This was written during Feb 13, 2013, but I only got the time to post it now so the use of “yesterday” and “last night” may be a bit confusing.

Feb 12, 2013 was one of the most surreal days in my life for it was a day filled with emotions and feelings that I will never be able to fully explain. What happened yesterday night (feb 12, 2013) is something that I will never ever forget for it was, in more ways than one, one of the most heart-throbbing moment in my life. Without further ado, it was the night I finally got my act together and PROMposed to the one friend who truly made the past year, a year like no other.

As you’ve probably read in my post titled, “The One Promblem where Imperfect is Perfect,” prom and finding the right date has been bothering for the past few weeks and even months. It was only last night (Feb 12, 2013) that all my confusion, anxiety and stressing over Prom was finally alleviated.

There’s always a first time and what happened on that day was a day full of firsts. It’s quite dumbfounding how when I was preparing to ask and the entire day prior to me asking, I felt so nervous and I just wanted the day to end; But looking back, I actually want to be able to do it all over again for I want to experience that mystifying fervor and zeal once more. Life truly is full of surprises and unpredictable twists and turns. I will never truly understand how in one moment we can feel this way, but in a few moments after, feel the exact opposite. We truly live in a bipolar world, where the scale can quickly be tipped into a different side. I’m not complaining or anything, for the unpredictability of life is what allows us to believe that, miracles do happen.

Quite honestly, 2 months ago, I never really thought of asking the person I just asked. It was only when I experienced that time of the year where you look back at everything that has happened that I truly realized that she was the only person I should ask for my life, more specifically my Junior Year, just wouldn’t be the same. She was the first girl friend who I really talked to and got to know better, so I guess it was just right for me to ask the one person who made my Junior year one of the craziest, highest and most memorable year in my life.

It was only when I left her house and sat in my car that what just happened started to sink in. It was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life for the butterfly build up in my stomach prior to asking was just out of this world. I am just really thankful to God that everything worked out. I was also really fortunate that her sister and her parents were very hospitable and amiable people. They showed no indifference whatsoever and were actually really vibrant and fervent about my plan of surprising this friend of mine.

In thinking up of my Promposal plan, I just wanted to do it in a simple but at the same time meaningful way. It may not have been the perfect Promposal, but I’m just happy that I was able to show my appreciation to this person who honestly, all jokes aside, changed me in more ways than one.

IMG_0937

After asking, I just felt really good and it seemed as though I regained my zeal, fervor and vibrance. I felt so full of energy that I couldn’t really fall asleep even if I was really dead tired from all the preparations and thinking about that day I would ask. It was finally done, and now I could focus on making the most out of what is left of my Junior year.

I can truly say that moments like these are what makes life worth living. Although, it may have been some of the longest hours in my life, it’s quite ironic how what seemed like forever yesterday, quickly passed by and became an ephemeral moment that I will forever look back at for it was a moment full of firsts and a moment that truly filled me with feelings and emotions I will never be able to describe. Feb 12, 2013 was simply a phantasmagorical day!

Why Math is more than the numbers…..

I haven’t posted in my blog so far because I’ve been bombarded with several assessments and projects as this school year comes to a close. Just yesterday, we also had a field trip to an island called Corregidor, which was a full day thing that sucked all my energy. Aside from that, I recently finally PROMposed to a friend of mine, which really made the past week a really hectic and crazy one.

I’ve really missed writing for my blog during the past week and I will start posting again in the upcoming days for I’ve got a few memories that I’d like to forever remember by writing a post on them, particularly, my PROMposal and my field trip to Corregidor, but since those two will be a bit content heavy, for the mean time, I’d like to share with you guys a part of my WIKI Math assessment that I just finished.

WIKI Math is like a review of our previous practice tests and is an outlet for us to correct our mistakes and at the same time review the different lessons of the past quarter. This is something that was only started this year and is one of the more creative assessments in Math. We are tasked to explain and show our solutions to three difficult items from our past practice tests. We then end it with reflection, where we rate our performance during the quarter and put our realizations. Since it is the fourth and final quarter already of my Junior Year, I decided to make my reflection in the last part a really deep one, and one portion of my reflection that I’d really like to share with the rest of the world is:

“One thing that I really learned this quarter was that Math is more than just the numbers. There was one time when we were working on a really challenging seat work on a new lesson, I remember my classmate who was having a hard time and was quite frustrated already, asking my math teacher, “Cher, how do we use this lesson in our life?” It was really astonishing that my classmate asked this especially since our lesson was on circles, segments and the like, so I too was curious as to how my math teacher would respond.

To my surprise, my math teacher wasn’t shocked and probably expecting the question or has been asked the question previously, she calmly answered, “Sometimes, it’s not always about applying the lesson directly to our daily lives but what we want the students to gain from this, are analytic and critical-thinking skills. It’s about how you respond to certain challenges and how you deal with these types of problems. Are you the type of person, who easily gives up? or are you the type of person, who’ll find every possible way until you are able to find a solution?”

When my classmate heard this, he was obviously silenced and a bit embarrassed for what my teacher just said was the truth for not just math but for school in general. When we grow up and face the real world, we obviously won’t remember all the academic lessons we learned during grade school, high school or college, but what we will remember and what will stay with us for the rest of our lives are the values that we were able to build and gain when we tried to understand the lesson and in answering those perplexing problems.

As Junior Year comes to a close, I can say that the one thing I truly learned from this class is that, “Math it’s not always about the numbers or the grades, but more about the (real life) values we are able to learn from answering all these problems.”

FRIENDS ARE THE REASONS FOR THE MEMORIES

2013 XS Fair - XCALIBUR

2013 XS Fair – XCALIBUR

XCalibur 2013 and Shift Happens Variety Show – A Weekend to Remember (Feb 2,3 2013)

Another weekend has just flown by as quickly as it came in. Another anticipated event of this year has just come to a close, and without a doubt, it deserved all the hype it got. As I close another chapter of my life, I’d like to recall all the zealous, vibrant and awe-inspiring moments that took place this weekend during non other than our annual school fair titled, “XCALIBUR.”

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect for this year’s fair because of several different reasons. First of all, during the previous 3 years, our booth was always something related to the toy gun, Nerf. This was because one of my classmate’s father was the distributor of Hasbro so we could easily borrow Nerf equipment, especially since Nerf is such a hit when it comes to kids. The only problem with Nerf experience was that it was such a hassle picking up the bullets and having to reload the gun time and again. Aside from that, the frequent jamming of the gun and draining of the battery really made it a really troublesome job. Don’t get me wrong, it was amazing seeing kids excited to load up the Nerf Gun and play in our booth, but I really didn’t get to enjoy the fair during the last few years because I was very dedicated to manning our booth and with the Nerf concept, there wasn’t much leeway and free time.

The second reason was that it was the first time in 15 years that our school would be having a DUNK booth. To top it off, it was my class that came up with the idea to revive this game, and we dubbed it, the “DUNkGEON.” Because of the fact that I am relatively new to this class, I was really excited to start a new and make the most out of this second to the last fair of mine (as a student) in Xavier School. I wasn’t expecting much, but this fair turned out to be a fair full of firsts and crazy moments.

Dunked, Floured, Slimed, Flushed - Loved Every Single Moment

Dunked, Floured, Slimed, Flushed – Loved Every Single Moment

It was only this year that I truly was able to enjoy our fair and experience how crazy and high our school fair really is. From getting dunked by my cousins, to getting floured and gooed up, and ending up having to get flushed to remove the slime that got stuck in my ear, this fair was a really crazy experience.

To top everything off, I ended up going with my friends to the variety show. My friends had to go to the variety show to meet there set-ups for prom, so I went to support them and keep them company. Even if I really didn’t want to go to the variety show, I ended up enjoying my time because of the really hilarious things we ended up doing. It’s really funny and unbelievable how we ended up going to the variety show, but we didn’t really watch the show at all. Instead of sitting down and watching a sort of boring show that happens every year, we made the most out of our time by doing something really crazy.

Feeling "Endorser/Model" of All-inBurg

Feeling “Endorser/Model” of All-inBurg

I was really feeling a bit high and conversational on that day so when I came across this burger stall called “AllInBurgh” that seemed relatively new; I immediately struck up a conversation with the people there and inquired about why they started, when they started, where were their branches and the like. I really enjoyed getting to know the perspective of these fresh out of college entrepreneurs who were trying to hopefully start out small and eventually build their way to the top. I really found their wagyu burger really tasty and satisfying especially for the cost. Because of this and the fact that I was feeling extra generous on that day, I ended up advertising their booth to every person I knew in the variety show. From garnering only a few sales when me and my friends came across their stall, a few minutes later, they were taking orders left and right and eventually sold out.

It really felt gratifying to help these young entrepreneurs advertise their product and show some support to them. With the quality and taste of their burgers, I have a feeling that last saturday won’t be the last time I’ll be hearing about their burgers. (here’s a link to their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/AllInBurgh)

Friend's reaction after tasting the wagyu burger of AllInBurg

Friend’s reaction after tasting the wagyu burger of AllInBurg

But the experience that really made my Saturday night was the moment when my friend walked up to a complete stranger and acted as if he knew her. Actually, he did think he knew her, but quite frankly, clothes and looks can be deceiving. It started off with me daring him to talk to this certain girl than he told me that he already knew this girl because they were family friends. So I told him to introduce me to this girl, but as we were eating, the girl suddenly disappeared. An hour later, we thought that we saw the girl again, so I gave my friend the look and he said, “fine, I’ll introduce you to her.” He slowly walked to this girl who was buying food and talking to her friend, and he held her from the back and said, “Hey -insert name of girl here-, long time no see.” As the girl turned around, a look of shock crossed my friend’s face as he realized that this wasn’t the “family friend” of his. My friend was shocked and devastated at what he just did especially since the girl remained silent and gave him a really puzzled and dumb-founded look. Looking back, it was a really hilarious moment especially how we saw them again and we ended up going to them and saying sorry for my friend’s “miscalculation.” My friend may have been bitter and ashamed about what he did, but I’m sure when he looks back at that night, that will be the one thing he remembers.

All those jaw-dropping things I’ve mentioned so far took place on a Saturday and I was really expecting Sunday to be just as awesome, but sad to say that it was really hard to beat everything that happened last Saturday. What I learned about going to the fair on Sundays is that expect it to be a lot less crowded and populated but at the same time, expect it to be a lot less exciting because of the fact that there aren’t much people on Sundays. To add insult to injury, more than half of my close group of friends weren’t able to make it. One had to leave really early, another acquired a fever, while another had no driver for that day. To say the least, a boring day became even more boring when I heard that these close friends of mine wouldn’t be able to make it.

What I realized from having a super duper kaduper awe-inspiring, crazy, high and phenomenal Saturday followed by a less awesome, and a bit lackluster Sunday is the importance of having friends and why they’re usually the ones who are able to make practically nothing into something. This is because I’ve come to a conclusion that when we are around our friends, our crazy and high side comes out. Our friends are usually able to bring out the best from us and are able to help us enjoy even the most shallow and simplest of things. Having a mundane Sunday really made me appreciate my friends and how they are responsible for all these memorable experiences of mine.

There were a thousand more things that happened both on saturday and sunday, but I can’t really put into words everything that happened. That is how crazy and awesome the weekend was. Aside from that, there are somethings that are better not written down for personal reasons, but nevertheless, if you sum everything up, the weekend was truly indescribable and one to be remembered, for sure!

The One PROMblem, Where Imperfect Can Be Perfect…..

PROM – The Surreal Moment That Brings Imperfect People Together

When I first entered high school, prom was a topic that was always out there that seemed so much like a fantasy, something unreal, an event that comes out of fairy tales. All the different stories about promposals and all the hype that the event is able to bring in really made me look forward to the time I’d be in Junior Year. Fast forward 3 years later, and here I am, prom season at its peak, just a month away, without a date.

From being the highlight of Junior Year, prom has quickly made it into the blacklist of many students out there, including me. It’s difficult not to think about it each and everyday for Prom is inching closer and closer and everyday not asking is another crucial day loss. Aside from that, everyday without a date is another day, where one has to face the constant question, “Who do you plan to ask/who are you taking to prom?” from not just friends, but also from family members.

Thousands of questions pop up in my head whenever prom is mentioned, which in the past few months, has been happening almost everyday. Questions like: What is the true meaning of Prom? What is it truly all about? Is it about dressing up with princess like gowns for girls, and suiting up for guys? Is it a passing of rights or ritual that one must go through before ending high school? and most especially, “WHO SHOULD I BRING TO PROM?”

For me, Prom is about bringing that one special friend from the opposite sex and making that person feel appreciated and loved for one magical night. The problem is, for many, this special person doesn’t exist as of yet. Most are still either still starting to opening up and getting to know people from the opposite sex or not entirely sure who they are closest with. Because of all the factors one has to take into account when choosing the perfect promdate, a lot of drama, headaches, and controversies are mixed into the equation. For instances, a not so uncommon occurrence these days is two people wanting to bring the same person, so a lot of drama happens. There’s also the fear of being rejected and turned down. Because of this, some students end up not promposing at all, and just end up being set-up by either their more popular friends or by their relatives.

In my case, I fall into category of students just starting to broaden their horizons and getting to know people from the opposite sex. For those who don’t know, it’s probably just this year that I’ve really tried to establish friendships with girls. To be frank and sincere with you guys, I’m quite a shy person when it comes to girls and it was just this year that I’ve tried to undergo a transformation, put in more effort and break out of my shell. Due to the circumstances, I’m really really confused to death as to who I should take to prom. As you know, I am quite a sentimental person, and I want this prom night to be as breath taking for me and my date as it can be.

Just recently, my friend offered to set-up me up with this girl, but I’m not truly sure whether I should take up his offer or not. I know that it’s crunch time right now for prom is only a month a way, but I really want to be able to find the right person for prom. No matter how drop-dead gorgeous the set-up may be, I just don’t think I’d enjoy prom as much compared to if I asked a friend I’ve known beforehand. I really don’t know; maybe I’m putting too much meaning into Prom, but then again, I just want to have a memorable prom.

A lot of people are agonized by the fact that their prom only happens once/twice in their lives, but that is also why according to many, prom is something that is able to transcend time and space, and bring out emotions and feelings that were always locked up inside us. Feelings of joy, happiness, a sense of achievement, appreciation and a whole lot more that we will only truly understand when we experience for ourself. This is why, no matter how much promblems, headaches and heartaches prom brings, I am no doubt, looking forward to that very special night, which for our school, falls on the 9th of March.

There are many ephemeral things in life, things that only last for a very short time. In my opinion, the amazing JOURNEY full of learning experiences, trying moments, ups and downs, simple joys, known more conventionally as high school, is one of the more consequential and ephemeral things in life. We may hate and curse everyday that we have to drag ourselves into class each and every morning, but no doubt, when it’s all said and done, we will miss going to school and all those unbelievable and mind-blowing experiences.

Trust me on this one, 10 years from now, we surely won’t remember all the equations in math, all the elements in the periodic table or all the names in history class, but what we will remember are those mystical moments that are etched to our hearts because of the mere fact that the magic in these moments is the one thing that teachers will never be able to explain to us, and without a doubt, Prom is one of these moments.

One shouldn’t expect prom to be a perfect night, but one can surely make it a moment that brings together two highly imperfect people in a perfectly surreal way that you will no doubt remember for the rest of your life. In the grand scheme of things, I’ve realized that what truly matters is what we make of the night. Like I always say, “Life is what you make it,” in other words, “PROM IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT.”

No matter what other’s say, Prom itself is Junior Year, and I want to be able to take that one person who truly defines what a Junior Year it has been. No matter how imperfect this person may be, I’ll take her, as long as she’s perfect for me.

The Peaceful Shore We’ve All Been Looking For

The school week has finally ended and it’s friday again, and I’d like to share two quotes that I came across this past week that really caught my attention. These two quotes come from two very different books written in completely different languages.

The first quote is from the classical book “Julius Caesar” by Shakespeare (a book we are currently tackling in English Class):

"Julius Caesar" by Shakespeare

“Julius Caesar” by Shakespeare

“Men at some time are masters of their fate. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.

Given the timing of me starting my own blog and making a resolution to stop passing on opportunities, this quote was something I could really relate to. We are who we want to be. We can become who we want to become as long as we do what it takes. We are given thousands and thousands and opportunities and choices, and the decision always falls into our hands. Based on what we choose, our life changes accordingly. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as destiny, for we are responsible for our future.

We are who we are today because of everything we’ve done in the past. I remember what my Filipino Teacher told us when we were tackling the different problems in society, “It doesn’t mean you were born poor, you’ll die poor.” Too many people these days are wallflowers who are afraid to do something about their lives. People complain left and right, blame different people, not knowing that ranting and feeling sorry won’t help them. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not saying that everyone will be the next rags-to-riches story, but one must never lose hope. It’s about fighting your hardest and enduring the pain even during the hardest of times.

Hand in hand with the previous quote above from Julius Caesar, another remarkable quote that really caught my eye during this week was from, “Dekada 70” by Lualhati Bautista, another must read book that we tackled just recently in our Filipino class.

"Dekada 70" by Lualhati Bautista

“Dekada 70” by Lualhati Bautista

This particular quote reinforces the previous quote about getting what you deserve and how life just gives us what we work for.

“Ang payapang pampang ay para lang sa mga pangahas na sasalnga sa alimpuyo ng mga alon sa panahon ng unos.” (in english, “The peaceful shores are only for those daring enough to put up with the whirlpool by the waves during times of storms/typhoons.”)

This quote is so true and really shoves into our faces the reality of life; the fact that life is harsh, and only the strong will survive. Those who are willing to go the extra mile; those who are willing to fight for what they believe in no matter the odds or circumstance; those who are willing to stick it out even the most difficult of times; those who won’t quit just because they don’t get what they want; They’re the only ones, who’ll be able to make it to the peaceful shores. They’ll be the ones standing on top and achieving their goals and dreams. And when they’re standing on top of the mountain they just conquered, ask them if it was worth it. Without a doubt, I’m sure they’ll look you straight into the eye and tell you that every blood, sweat and tear it took them to get to the peak were all worth it.

How far are you willing to go to reach the Peaceful Shore?

How far are you willing to go to reach the Peaceful Shore?

Life is the hardest battle one has to face for it is a showdown between you and yourself. Who’ll come up victorious can only be decided by one person, and that person is YOU! When the going gets tough, don’t be afraid; don’t fret for it’s just another storm you’ll have to put up if you want to see the peaceful shore!
